Revealed : the unreleased recordings / Hank Williams
[S.l.] : Time Life, 2009
Abstract: At the peak of his career in 1951, Hank Williams recorded a radio show for the Mother's Best Flour Company. He sang with his regular studio band and recorded his hits as well as songs he never recorded commercially anywhere else. In the songs and chatter, Hank Williams takes us back to his world. On one of the earliest surviving shows, Hank plays the just-released Cold, Cold Heart without any idea of what it will do for his career. On one of the later shows, his back pain is so crippling he has to sing sitting down.

Originally led by Houston born guitarist Cal Green, the group began life on the Federal label under the name the Royals, before the national exposure granted them by their first hit, the colossal "Work With Me Annie," forced them to change their name to in deference to the popular vocal group the Five Royales. Green's coruscating lead work can be heard on tracks like "Finger Popping Time" and the frantic "Let `Em Roll" while Hank Ballard's impassioned vocals had an enormous influence on the musical development of James Brown, who initially modeled himself after the singer.

High Wide & Handsome: the Charlie Poole Project / Loudon Wainwright
[S.l.] : Proper Records, 2009
Abstract: Charlie Poole (1892-1931) was a hard-living, plain-singing, banjo-picking raconteur, amateur baseball player, mill worker, boozer, and bootlegger whose name may not be as well known as, say, Jimmie Rodgers or the Carter Family, but who nonetheless helped define what country music later became. Loudon Wainwright built this album around both old songs associated with Poole and new ones that help move the Poole story forward for today's world. Poole was not primarily a songwriter; he took what he heard elsewhere and bent it to his will. But he had an inimitable populist style, a whole lot of attitude and charisma, and the kind of sly humor that a sly humorist like Wainwright certainly can embrace. Of the 30 tracks spread across these two discs, all but nine were found among Poole's own, relatively small catalog. Without attempting to replicate the acoustic string band sound of the '20s and early '30s, Wainwright gets to the heart of songs such as "I'm the Man Who Rode the Mule Around the World," "Moving Day" (with the Roches on background vocals), "The Letter That Never Came," and "Mother's Last Farewell Kiss," tunes that Poole waxed and which, in the hands of Wainwright, manage to open a window into the Depression-era life while remaining viable to contemporary ears. Abstract: Paul Burch has been a rock-steady songwriter since he began making records in the late '90s. His trademark -- and all but indescribable -- manner of combining musical styles from vintage country, rockabilly, Western swing, blues, swing jazz, and even postwar Latin rhythms is as baffling and beautiful as his mellifluous tenor, which sounds timeless, is. And his recording and production style is usually quite minimal and always has a live feel; he has always tried to get the warmest sound possible without losing the tension of a band in a room in front of microphones and tape machines. Still Your Man is Burch's most compelling collection of songs yet. Along with his killer band, the WPA Ballclub -- Jim Gray, Fats Kaplin, Dennis Crouch, Jen Gunderman, Dennis Church, and Marty Lynds -- Burch brought back the guests from his last recording, East to West, Tim O'Brien and Kelly Hogan, to help out. But the unofficial member of the band is Burch's Pan American Studio. The songwriter purchased an old empty garage near Music Row for its high ceilings and converted it into a recording studio. The high ceilings enable him to get the warmth in the sound he wanted (little to no slap-back). He recorded himself and the band playing these songs live with minimal editing done in the mixing process. The end result is immediate; it puts the listener inside the recording experience, lending the illusion that one is in the presence of the musicians as they play, which gives the sound a great deal of weight.
